| compromise | A settlement of a dispute in which each side gives up some of its demands. |

| power | Strength; the ability to act or do; control over |
| flatboat | A large boat with a flat bottom and squared end, often used to float down rivers |
| government | A rule over country, state, district, the system of ruling |
| governor | A person selected to be in charge of something, the main leader of a state. |
| boatmen | A person who uses a boat or works on a boat |
| colony | A group of persons who move from their own land to start a settlement somewhere else; the place of a country settled such as a group |
