Colonial New York

Colonial New York and English Settlements - 4th Grade Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is an apprentice? A person who works for another in order to learn a trade.
What is a colony? A place that is ruled by another country.
What was the Dutch West India Company? The Dutch trading company that set the colony of New Netherland. It was first set up for fur trading.
What is a governor? A person who runs a colony or state.
What is a indentured servant? A person who works for a employer for a period of time in return for payment of travel expenses.
What is a merchant? A person who buys and sells goods.
What is a colonist? A person who lives in a colony.
What is a patroon? The land owner in New Netherland who had to bring 50 settlers to the colony to help his land.
What is a Port? A place where ships load and unload their goods.
What is a settlement? A colony in a new region.
What is slavery? The practice of making one person the property of another.
Who is Peter Minuit? The first governor of the New Netherland colony. He bought Manhattan Island for beads, tools and weapons.
Who is Peter Stuyvesant? The governor of New Netherland from 1647-1664. He did many great things and was very strict.
What is a tax? Money that people pay to the government so that it can perform services.
