Chapter 11 Section 4

Wilson Fights for Peace

QuestionAnswer
Wilson was an idealist, he saw past the bitter feelings between Germany and the allies and dreamed of what? The League of Nations
What were Wilson's Fourteen Points? 1. No secret treaties 2. Freedom of Seas 3. Tariffs should be lowered or abolished 4. Reduce army size 5. imperialists need to think about the people in the country theyre taking over 6-13. Boundary changes 14. League of Nations
What were Wilson's 14 points meant to do? making countries open up, prevent wars and bad feelings, be peaceful, to help everyone just get along =)
Who were the 3 main Allie leaders present at Versailles. How did they feel about peace? Clemanceau (France), George (Britain), and Orlando (Italy). They were very bitter and wanted revenge
What happened at Versailles? The "Big Four" allie leaders decided what would happen (The Central Powers werent invited) Wilson conceded most of his fourteen points so the other 3 would agree with a league of nations
What were the main points in the Treaty of Versailles? It created Czechloslovakia, Poland, as well as 7 other nations. It shifted boundaries like Alsace and Lorraine was given back to France. It said Germany couldnt have an army and Germany had to pay $33 billion in reparations
What were the big weaknesses in the Treaty of Versailles? It was INCREDIBLY anti-German, the rules which were meant to surpress the Germans and "get back" at them only made them angry and eventually caused WWII. It ignored Vietnam's cries for independence and took territory from Russia (an Allie)
Some American's were against the Treaty of Versailles (it was too harsh or turned their German homeland into Poland), others were less against the treaty itself, and more against this The League of Nations. People like Henry Cabot Lodge were suspicious of trying to economically and militarily control Germany, this threatened US isolationism
Did the Treaty of Versailles pass through the Senate? No, it was rejected twice. It would have been accepted if Wilson compromised but he did not. The US signed a seperate treaty with Germany after Wilson's presidency
When it all boils down what was the effect of WWI? Nothing really, it created instability and unrest among people and although it was supposed to be the war to end all wars it was to be a cause for a much greater war later on.
