| Fertile Crescent | A fertile region in southwestern Asia that includes the region of Mesopotamia. |
| Silt | A mixture of tiny bits of soil and rock washed up by rivers, which creates fertile land. |
| Drought | Long periods of dry weather, in which there is no rainfall and crops are greatly damaged. |
| Tigris and Euphrates | The two major rivers of Mesopotamia which began in the Taurus Mountains of Turkey. |
| Polytheism | The belief in many gods. |
| Ziggurat | A large mud-brick building with a temple on its peak. |
| Cuneiform | System of writing invented by the Sumerians and also used by the Babylonians. |
| Code of Hammurabi | A written set of laws that applied to everyone in Babylon. |
| Scribe | A writer who kept records and copied letters and official documents. |
