| 15th Amendment | (1870) gave African American men the right to vote |
| Black Codes | laws created by Southern legislatures during Reconstruction that took away the civil rights of freedom |
| Congressional Reconstruction | Congress took control of reconstruction, divided the South into military districts, and Southern states had to ratify the 14th Amendment |
| Military Reconstruction | military took responsibility for bringing the South back into the Union and southern states had to ratify the 15th Amendment |
| sharecropping | farmers who worked on someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops & the use of their equipment |
| tenant farming | farmers who owned farming equipment, but worked on someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops |
| Freedmen's Bureau | federal agency created in 1865 to provide aid to former slaves and poor whites |
