| What were the four long-term causes of America entering World War I? | Imperialism, Militarism (arms race), Formation of Alliances, and Nationalism |

| Who were the Triple Alliance? | Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy |
| Who formed the Central Powers? Why were foreign alliances a cause of the war? | Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary. They formed an unsteady balance of power, tipping the balance caused insecurity and sparks between nations |
| The "Balkan Powder Keg" was set off by what? | The assassination of Franz Ferdinand (The Ruler of Austria) which was caused by Serbia. |
| How did the explosion of the "Balkan Keg" cause a domino effect? | Austria being in war obligated Germany to help. Germany declared war on Russia, Russia's ally France stepped in. The Germans tried to go through Belgium to get to France, so Britain fought to protect Belgium |
| The Allies faced there first battle when Germany came up with this plan, how was it carried out? | The Schlieffen Plan called for Germany to invade Belgium as a shortcut to get to Paris France, the Allies held strong though and stopped the German forces |
| What was trench warfare? | Soldiers would live in nasty trenches and fire across no-mans land to enemy trenches. No man's land was covered in barbed wire and many men died running through it. Trench Warfare was inconclusive, no one could win |
| What was the Socialist view on WWI? | American's should not be involved in something that wasn't any of our business. |
| What view on WWI did naturalized (emigrant) citizens hold? | The sympathized with their home countries |
| What led to American support of the Allies? | British atrocity stories (mostly yellow journalism) made Americans sympathize as they read stories of German's setting fire to houses and killing lots of innocent people and we had close economic ties with the allied countries |
| American's did not want to fight. What were the two reasons we joined the allies? | To ensure allies repayment of debts to the US. To prevent German's from threatening US shipping. |
| What did America and Germany think of the British blockade of German ports? | Germany was angry because it prevented them from getting foodstuffs and fertilizer for crops so famine struck Germany. America was angry because it threatened freedom of the seas |
| What was the final straw that turned Americans against Germany? | They began using submarines to bomb British/Allie ships, however they sunk the Lusitania which carried 125 American passengers and we got pissed |
| How did the Germans use unrestricted submarine warfare as blackmail? | They said they would stop using U-boats if we convinced the British to get rid of their blockade |
| Who participated in and who won the tight election of 1916? | Wilson ran against Hughes. Hughes went to bed thinking he had won but woke up in the morning only to see that Wilson had beat him out |
| What was Wilson's standpoint on the war? | He attempted to mediate, he just wanted everyone to get along and form a "league of peace" |
| What was the Zimmerman note? | A telegram from Germany to Mexico, telling Mexico to join with Germany now and Germany would help Mexico regain Texas and New Mexico later |
| What was the final action that "forced" America into the war. | Russia was now a monarchy, so American believed we should fight for the idea of democracy |
