What did people use instead of money to buy goods? They bartered and used tobacco
How did farmers pay their debts? They bought goods on credit and paid when they sold their crops
Did people use banks to save money? There were no banks in Colonial Virginia
What kind of food was available in Colonial Virginia? Food was limited and consisted of local produce and meats
What kind of houses were used in Colonial Virginia? Most people lived in one-room houses with dirt floors; a few farmers lived in larger homes
What is barter? Trading goods and services without the use of money
What is credit? Buying goods or services now and paying for them later
What is money? A medium of exchange that includes coins and bills.
What is savings? Money that is put away to be used at a later time.
What is debt? Goods or money owed to another person.
What is a cash crop? Crops grown to be sold for money - for example, tobacco in Virginia
In what region of Virginia did the English settle? Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions
In what region of Virginia did the Germans and Scots Irish settle? Valley and Ridge region
In what region of Virginia did the Africans settle? Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions
How did tobacco change life in Virginia? Virginia became an agricultural economy Tobacco became a source of income Virginia became very dependent on slave labor because many workers were needed to grow tobacco
Why was Virginia's capital moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg? Better drinking water, too many fires and the benefits of a higher elevation
How did the culture of Virginia reflect the beliefs, customs and architecture of the Europeans, Africans and American Indians? They built places to live, work and worship - homes, barns and churches
