Immigration and Growth of Cities

What is urbanization? Cities grew rapidly after the Civil War.
Why did immigration increase dramatically? 1: Hope for better opportunities. 2: Religious freedom. 3: Escape from oppressive governments in other countries. 4: Adventure.
Where was the main point of entry for immigrants? Ellis Island, New York.
Which groups of immigrants experienced discrimination and cultural conflicts? Irish and Chinese.
What gained power in many cities and often depended on the votes of immigrants? "Political Machines"
How did "Political Machines" gain power? Voting fraud, bribery, political corruption.
How did "Political Machines" try to solve immigration and urbanization issues? They tried to help immigrants find jobs, housing, etc. They expected the immigrants' votes in return.
Where was the specialized industry of TEXTILES (cloth) concentrated? TEXTILES (cloth) = NEW ENGLAND
Where was the specialized industry of MEAT PACKING concentrated? MEAT PACKING = CHICAGO (Illinois)
Where was the specialized industry of STEEL concentrated? STEEL = PITTSBURGH (Pennsylvania)
Where was the specialized industry of AUTOMOBILES concentrated? AUTOMOBILES = DETROIT (Michigan)
Americans moved from RURAL (farm) areas to where? URBAN (city) areas
Why did Americans move from rural (farm) areas to urban (city) areas? For job opportunities
What specialized industry centered in the New England area? Textiles (cloth)
What specialized industry centered in Chicago, Illinois? Meat Packing
What specialized industry centered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? Steel
What specialized industry centered in Detroit, Michigan? Automobiles
What does immigration mean? When people are moving INTO your country from another one. (INmigration)
What were settlement houses? Housing started by volunteers to improve life in poor urban neighborhoods.
What were the conditions of the tenements that the immigrants lived in? Often unhealthy buildings.
Why were settlement houses started? As a way to improve urbanization problems with housing. Often, tenements that people lived in were unhealthy so this was part of the effort to solve that issue.
Immigrant neighborhoods were often overcrowded and became _____. Ghettos
