What is a "network"? A web of weak social ties.
Wo does a network commonly include? People we know of or people who know of us, but with whom we interact rarely, if at all.
What is 1 thing that shapes networks? Gender
What are some examples of formal organizations and why are they considered impersonal? Examples - Business corporations & government agencies. (Their greater size makes them not meet personal needs, but can accomplish complex goals.)
As of 2002, how many people used the Internet? Over 400 million in 180 (of 192) countries.
What are "formal organizations"? Large secondary groups that are organized to achieve their goals efficiently.
What effects group dynamics? Race, class, ethnicity, class, & gender.
What are the 4 ways social diversity influences intergroup contact? Large groups turn inward, heterogeneous groups turn outward, social inequality promotes contact, physical boundaries create social boundaries.
What is the power of "total institutions"? To transform a human being's sense of self.
What factors shape modern organizations? Technology, economic/political trends, population patterns, and other organizations.
What is a bureaucracy? Organizational model rationally designed to perform tasks efficiently.
What is a utilitarian organization and why do most people join? One that pays for their effort/ to make a living.
