| What role did Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania have in people moving west? | There were loading animals and wagons onto flat boats to journey down the Ohio river. |
| What were some of the problems that western settlers might have faced in their journey's westward. | The problems that they might of had were carrying such heavy supplies, and traveling with currents and also high and low tides. narrow trails, barley fit a single wagon. there were also many tree stumps. |
| What are turnpikes? | Roads built by a private company that charges a toll th use it. |
| What are corduroy roads? | Roads made of logs. |
| Although river travel was faster and cheaper than road travel, it had problems as well. What were some of these problems? | Moving up-stream was very difficult, they had to push against the currents, and had to haul the boat ashore. |
| What was Robert Fulton's contribution to this era of moving west? | He built his own steam boat, The Clermont on the Hudson River. |
| How could steam boat travel be treacherous or dangerous? | Sparks from smokestack could cause fries, as the steam boat captains raced each other along the river high pressure boilers sometimes explode! |
| What is a canal? | artificial channel filled with water to allow boats to cross a stretch of land. |
| Who was De Witt Clinton, and what was his contribution to canal building? | He was the New York governor. He persuaded state landmarks to provide money for the Erie Canal. |
| How did your transportation systems in the Untied States compare with those in France? | American's could easily ship goods from the Western frontier to any part of the country. France was a mush smaller country, many large towns could not be reached by road at all! |
