Unit 1 Lesson 4

Nomads nomads, or people without permanent homes. They moved from place to place following herds of animals. They hunted animals for food and skins
Bands bands, or small family groups that lived and worked together. Over thousands of years, the bands slowly moved across North America and South America.
Ancestors ancestors, or early family members, of present-day Native Americans. Native Americans are also called American Indians.
Adapt adapt, or change their ways of life, to survive in the new climate.
Cultures cultures, or ways of life. In warm weather, they grew crops. In winter, they hunted.
longhouses longhouses, or long, narrow buildings with curved roofs. They were made from poles cut from young trees that were bent and tied and then covered with bark. The Lenape also lived in smaller round buildings called wigwams.
oral stories oral stories were about the beginning of the world. One story told how the world grew on the back of a giant turtle.
