TermDefinition
Civilization The characteristic of a group of people that includes living together, farming a surplus of food, and specializing in trades. Culture
City-State A kingdom or state made up of a central city and the territory surrounding it.
Empire A large group of conquered territories ruled by a leader or nation.
Culture Characteristics that the citizens of a group all share (e.g. food, skin, customs)
Ziggurat A religious structure used for worshipping. Usually had a rectangle shaped base and mud-brick walls.
Cuneiform A system of writing used by the Mesopotamians, consisting of dots and dashes made by a reed stylus.
Irrigation Artificially supplying water to a land
Code of Laws A tangible documentation of the rules and laws of a society
Social Pyramid An illustration of the organization of the social classes in a society.
Artisan A skilled laborer who practices a trade or craft
Merchant Someone who provides services or goods to someone for money or a reward
Scribe An educated craftsman who writes books or documents by hand
Patriarchal A society that is ruled by a man
Sumer A land known as the Fertile Crescent
Akkadian Empire An empire that ruled Mesopotamia whose capital was Akkadia
Sargon The King of the Akkadian Empire
Hammurabi The King of the Babylonian Empire
Babylon An ancient city in Mesopotamia
Neo-Babylonian Empire The last empire to rule Mesopotamia
Nebuchadnezzar The King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire
