| Civilization | The characteristic of a group of people that includes living together, farming a surplus of food, and specializing in trades. Culture |
| City-State | A kingdom or state made up of a central city and the territory surrounding it. |
| Empire | A large group of conquered territories ruled by a leader or nation. |
| Culture | Characteristics that the citizens of a group all share (e.g. food, skin, customs) |
| Ziggurat | A religious structure used for worshipping. Usually had a rectangle shaped base and mud-brick walls. |
| Cuneiform | A system of writing used by the Mesopotamians, consisting of dots and dashes made by a reed stylus. |
| Irrigation | Artificially supplying water to a land |
| Code of Laws | A tangible documentation of the rules and laws of a society |
| Social Pyramid | An illustration of the organization of the social classes in a society. |
| Artisan | A skilled laborer who practices a trade or craft |
| Merchant | Someone who provides services or goods to someone for money or a reward |
| Scribe | An educated craftsman who writes books or documents by hand |
| Patriarchal | A society that is ruled by a man |
| Sumer | A land known as the Fertile Crescent |
| Akkadian Empire | An empire that ruled Mesopotamia whose capital was Akkadia |

| Hammurabi | The King of the Babylonian Empire |
| Babylon | An ancient city in Mesopotamia |
| Neo-Babylonian Empire | The last empire to rule Mesopotamia |
| Nebuchadnezzar | The King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire |
