What is the difference between urban and rural? Rural is the countryside and urban is the city, basic political unit in Sumer combine the two parts
What are city-states? a city-state is a city combined with it's countryside, amount of countryside controlled and depended on military strength.
How did city-states get along with each other? They did not get along. They fought over land and because of their problems, city-states grew strong armies, and thick walls. City-states gained and lost power over time.
How was Sargon able to build the first empire? He had a permanent army and he fought and conquered against many cities in Sumer. He also extended the Akkadian territory.
What is an empire? A land with different territories and people under a single rule.
What is polytheism? The worship of many gods
What kind of powers did Sumerians believe their gods possessed? Air, wisdom, love and war, sun and moon
Why did priests gain high status in Sumer? They relied on them to help gain the gods favor
What was Sumer's social hierarchy? First: KIngs, Second: priests, Third: craftspeople, merchants, Fourth: farmers, laborers
What were men and women's roles? Men held political powers and made laws. Women took care of the home, and the children. Also, some educated women were priestesses.
