The Rise of Sumer

What is the definition of urban? Urban = busy cities
What is the definition of rural? Rural = countryside
What were city states? A city state is a city and all the countryside around it.
How did city states get along with each other? They only fought, the military strength represented the amount of countryside they owned.
How was Sargon able to build a empire? He rebelled against Sumer, took over his city, built Akkad into military power.
What is an empire? An empire is land with different territories and peoples under a single rule.
What is polytheism? The worship of a god or gods.
What kind of powers did Sumerians believe their gods possessed? Love, war, air, wisdom, sun, moon
How did city states get along with each other? They never did, they always fought for shorteges that cities had.
Why did priests gain high status in Sumer? Priests interpreted wishes and made offerings to the gods
What was Sumers social hierarchy? The division of society by rank or class
What were men and women's roles? craftsmen, merchants, traders, ect.
