What's the difference between rural and urban? Rural is countryside, while urban is more city-like.
What were city states? An area which consisted of a city with countryside all around it. The amount of countryside that they could control depended on the military strength.
How did the city states get along with each other? They didn't get along well at all. They often fought about farmland. To protect themselves, they built strong armies and thick walls.
How was Sargon able to build the first empire? Sargon's soldiers defeated all the city states of Sumer, and then they conquered northern Mesopotamia, bringing the entire region under his rule. He wanted to extend the Akkadian territory, and he was the first ruler to have a permanent army.
What's an empire? A land with different territories and people under a single rule.
What's polytheism? The worship of many gods.
What powers did Sumerians believe their gods possessed? They could bring good harvest or a horrible flood, illness or good health and wealth.
Why did priests gain high status in Sumer? People relied on them to gain the gods's favor.
What were men and women's roles? Men usually held political power and made laws. Women usually took care of the house and children. Education was usually for men, but some upper class women were educated as well.
