popular sovereignty a gov in which the people rule; the people govern themselves; ex. voting for president
republicanism the belief that people excercise their power by voting or political representatives; ex 1. voting for senators; ex 2. house of burgesses
federalism the system of government in which power is divided between a central gov and states
separation of powers no one branch recieves all of the power of the gov; ex. executive- carries out the laws, judicial- interprets the laws, legislative- makes the laws
checks and balances a way to check each branch and make sure that no branch has complete power; the power is evenly distributed; ex 1. president can veto laws; ex 2. judicial review
limited government officials in gov are not allowed to abuse their power; ex. kevin brady was fined for drinking and driving even as part of the gov (representative of the woodlands)
individual rights every person has liberties and privlages that must be protected and not denied by the gov; ex 1. john zenger established the freedom of press; ex 2. people have the right to go on strike; ex 3. quartering acts violated this right
