| home territory | area where hunters and gatherers lived |
| domestication | human control over plant and animal life |
| surplus | extra or more than needed |
| migration | the movement of humans from one settlement location to another |
| specialization | assigning specific jobs to certain people within a culture |
| hominid | a mammal (great apes & humans) that walks on two legs |
| Neanderthal | early humans, simple language skills, no art/ music; short, study skeletons; first to bury their dead |
| Cro-Magnon | first MODERN humans; skilled toolmakers; first to farm which increases food supply; created cave art |
| Paleolithic | a period of human history from 2.3 million years ago until 10,000 years ago; people dependent on hunting/ gathering; simple, primitive cultures |
| Neolithic | a period of human history between 9500 BC and 3000 BC; start of farming; more complex cultures |
| Neolithic Revolution | the invention of farming which greatly changed how humans lived from that point on |
