theme The lesson the author wants the reader to learn; the big picture (not about a specific character or event
characterization The way the author reveals the character to the reader
dynamic character A character that changes throughout the course of the story
static character A character that DOES NOT change during the course of the story.
indirect characterization When an author reveals the personality of a character through his/her speech, actions, appearance, private thoughts or how other characters react to him/her.
direct characterization When the author uses a direct statement about a character to describe his/her personality.
suspense A technique an author uses to make a reader feel nervous, anxious or uncertain about what might happen in the story.
