Progressivism Under Taft

Who was Gifford Pinchot? Head of the US Forest Service under Teddy, he believed that the wilderness could be conserved while allowing public enjoyment and private development
How did William Taft enter the presidency? He was secretary of war under teddy, Teddy handpicked him to be the Republican candidate. He ran against Bryan and easily won
Taft was notorious for being? Quiet and cautious, especially in the shadow of Roosevelt, he had a hard time controlling even the people beneath him.
What was the Payne-Aldrich Tariff? It was a compromise between the Payne Bill which lowered tax tariffs, and the Aldrich bill which made them higher. The result was higher rates that were tightly moderated. Hardly progressive
Taft appointed Ballinger, a wealthy lawyer, to be secretary of the interior. What was Ballinger accused of? Letting commercial interests exploit natural resources that belonged to the public. He ended up having Pinchot (super conversationist) fired
What was the reason Republican Conservatives and Republican Progressivists split? Tafts support of Cannon, the Speaker of the House who often weakened progressivist bills. Eventually they kicked him out.
The split between the Conservatives and Progressivists caused what? The fall of the Republican party.
Roosevelt returns after and African hunting trip and everyone thinks he's a hero. What was the new nickname for his third party he created? The Bull Moose Party, Teddy boasted that he was as strong as a bull moose
The split of Republicans gave who a lot of hope? Democrats, and their reform candidate, Woodrow Wilson
What were citizen's four choices in the election of 1912? Teddy's Progressivism, Taft's conservatism, Wilson's New Freedom or the Socialist Party
