Connective Tissue

Human Anatomy - Connective Tissue Proper - Dense Connective Tissue

dense regular connective tissue - structure structure - densely packed, parallel collagen fibers; fibroblast nuclei squeezed between fibers; scrace ground substance
dense irregular connective tissue - structure structure - predominantly collagen fibers, randomly arranged and clumped together; fibroblasts in spaces among fibers; more ground substance than in dense regular connective tissue
elastic connective tissue - structure structure - predominantly freely branching elastic fibers; fibroblasts occupy some spaces between fibers
dense regular connective tissue - function function - attaches muscle to bone (tendons) and bone to bone (ligaments); resists stress applied in one direction
dense irregular connective tissue - function function - withstands stresses applied in all directions; durable
elastic connective tissue - function function - allows stretching of some organs
dense regular connective tissue - location location - forms tendons, most ligaments
dense irregular connective tissue - location location - fascia (internal to skin); around muscles and organs; dermis; periosteum covering bone; organ capsules
elastic connective tissue - location walls of elastic arteries; trachea; bronchial tubes; true vocal cords; suspenspry ligaments of penis and lungs
