Teddy Roosevelt's Square Deal

What political offices did Teddy hold before he ran for vice president? New York State Assembly, police comissioner, assistant secretary for the US Navy, Rough Rider (war hero), governor of New York.
Roosevelt was a young president, what sort of "ambitious" things did he partake in during his presidency? He galloped 100 miles on horseback, boxed. He was the youngest president ever when he entered the presidency at 42 years old.
What was the main idea of Roosevelt created "modern presidency" A president has the legal right to do whatever people demand, unless laws forbid it.
Define Square Deal used to describe the various progressive reforms sponsored by the Roosevelt administration
Roosevelt took up the responsibility of trustbusting, which is what? He filed many lawsuits against monopolies that went against public interest and shut down a few of them, however, this didnt keep companies from continuing to merge
How did the 1902 Coal Strike help define the presidency? When strikes occured, the federal government was expected to intervene, as a third party, and set up a compromise between the worker and the employer
What two Acts helped boost federal control over railroads? The Elkins Act made it illegal to give or take rebates and set fixed prices. The Hepburn Act limited the distribution of free railroad passes (often used as bribes)
What was the Meat Inspection Act? It dictated strict cleanliness requirements for meat packers and created the program for federal meat inspection
What problems was the Pure Food and Drug Act supposed to fix? It forced producers to label their items truthfully and they could not contaminate their products (with opium, cocaine or alcohol). The act reflected the idea that given truthful info, people will make better choices
How was environmental conservation in the early 1900s? non-existent, there were no laws so people dumped and cut down whatever they pleased.
Roosevelt was a big believer in nature conservation what did he do? He set up 148 million acres of forest reserves, 1.5 million acres to water power sites and he developed 50 wildlife sanctuaries
Roosevelt didnt believe in complete conservation of all wilderness, what did he believe? He believed that some of the wilderness should be used for the common good
What did the Newlands Act say? The federal government would manage water resources of the west
Roosevelt was not a supporter of Civil Rights for African Americans. What did he support? A few individual African Americans such as African American individuals like Booker T Washington, and an African American man he appointed to the south carolina customs house
Who wrote The Souls of Black Folk and strongly supported African American rights W.E.B Du Bois
Though the progressive era focused mainly on rights for middle class whites, what group was formed solely for the promotion of black rights? NAACP National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
