William H. Seward Secretary of State (1861-1869); expanded the US by purchasing Alaska from Russia
William Howard Taft 27th President of the United States. He established Dollar Diplomacy.
Theodore Roosevelt 26th President of the United States. He established Big Stick Diplomacy.
Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States. He established Moral Diplomacy, and led the US during World War I.
John Hay Secretary of State. Suggested an "Open Door" policy in China
Queen Liliuokalani Hawaii's ruler (1891-1895). Renounced her claim to the throne, and the U.S. annexed Hawaii
Philippines An island chain nation located in the Pacific Ocean near the continent of Asia. The U.S. gained it as a territory after the Spanish-American War.
Guam An island nation located in the Pacific Ocean near the continent of Asia. The U.S. gained it as a territory after the Spanish-American War.
Puerto Rico An island nation located in the Caribbean Sea south of the continent of North America. The U.S. gained it as a territory after the Spanish-American War.
Hawaii An island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, about 2,000 miles southwest of the continent of North America. The U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898, and in 1959 it became the 50th U.S. state.
Cuba An island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, south of the continent of North America. Cuba gained its independence as a result of the Spanish-American War.
China The largest nation on the continent of Asia, it was desired as a trading partner by 19th-century imperialist nations.
Alaska Purchased from Russia by the U.S. in 1867 for $7.2 million. Alaska would become the 49th state in 1959.
