The Origins of Progressivism

Who was Camella Teoli? A 12 year old (illegal working age) who faked being 14 so she could support her family. Her scalp was torn by a machine and she later protested for workers rights
What was the point of the progressive movement? It aimed to restore economic oppurtunites and correct injustices in American life (questioning giant corporations, making government more responsive to the people)
Progressive efforts all shared at least one of what four goals? Protect Social Welfare. Promote Moral Improvement. Create Economic Reform. Foster Efficiency (political change- end corruption)
What are some examples of things people did to Protect Social Welfare? Social Gospel and settlement house movements. YMCA provided recreation. Salvation Army gave out food and clothes.
Who was Florence Kelley? An advocate for iproving lives of women and children, especially in factories. She helped pass the Factory Act which prohibited child labor and limited women's working hours.
What was done to promote moral improvement? People aimed to uplift the poor and ostricized by having them change their behavior. Prohibition (alcohol was banned)and the WTCU helped
Who founded the Women's Christian Temperance Union? what did the group do? Frances Willard who's motto was "do everything". The union did everything from spearheading prohibition to building kindergartens. They were the largest group women's group in our nation's history
Why did some immigrants get angry when groups began to close down saloons? In some cultures alcohol was symbolic, saloons were also a food source and they often cashed checks.
Eugene V. Debs and socialism were the result of what? Big business gaining government favoritism, giving politicians power which they abused. Ordinary people were treated like crap. Corporations were treated too well. People wanted a balance.
What do you call a journalist like Ida Tarbell who wrote about corruptions in corporations and government? muckrakers (they were too busy writing about bad "muck" they never saw good things)
Who was Louis D. Brandeis? He believed that the high costs of long working hours took money from the individual and society (the system was not efficient)This was called the "Brandeis Brief"
What did Frederick Winslow Taylor do? He developed the idea of scientific management or "Taylorism" breaking down manufacturing jobs into simple parts (assembly line)
Unfortunately much of governmental reform was brought about by what? Natural Disasters. Leaders would botch attempts to clean up after a disaster and new commitees would take over, allowing commissions and managers to become the basis for governments
What did the mayor of Detroit, Hazen Pingree do to improve the city? instituted a fair tax structure, lowered fares for public transportation, rooted out corruption and set up a system of relief for the unemployed
What was the significance of Torn Johnson, the mayor of Cleveland? he was 1 of 19 socialist mayors who instituted progressive reform in the city. he believed citizens should play a more active role in government
Who was Robert "Fighting Bob" M La Follette? The governor, then senator of Wisconsin, he attempted to drive big businesses, especially the railroad industry out of politics
Define initiative A bill originated by people not lawmakers
Define referendum A public vote on an initiative
Define recall Normal people being able to kick out a government official through a re-election.
What does the 17th Amendment state? Senators will be elected through popular vote
