Bolsheviks | The Red Army led by Vladimir Lenin that overthrew the White Army and established the Soviet Union |
communist | Type of government in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe where the government controls the economy |
Bloody Sunday | In 1905 Palace guards shot down striking workers at the Winter Palace |
Germany | The country that is blamed for WWI |
Depression | A time in Germany when the economy collapsed because of hyperinflation |
Holocaust | The mass murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis |
Fascist | Extremely nationalistic |
Adolf Hitler | Fascist dictator of Germany that began WWII and caused the Holocaust |
WWII | This war began when Hitler invaded Poland |
Axis Powers | Germany, Italy and Japan |
Allied Powers | UK, France, Soviet Union and USA |
Western Germany, Western Europe and Western Berlin | Democratic parts of Europe |
Eastern Germany, Eastern Europe and East Berlin | Communist parts of Europe |
Soviet Union | Used military aggression to make Eastern Europe communist |
democracy | a type of government where citizens can vote and they have rights |
Berlin | Capital city of Germany that was divided after WWII |
Cold War | A time period when the two super powers- US and USSR threatened each other with nuclear war. |
Reunification | When Germany became on united country again after the fall of the Berlin wall. It was difficult because the communist side was lagging behind economically and technologically. |
Antisemitism | A form of prejudice against Jewish people |
Propaganda | When you use various forms of media to support a cause whether it is true or just . Hitler used this to gain support. |
Censorship | When the government restricts certain forms of media such as film, song or books. |
Soviet Bloc/Communist Bloc | All of the countries of Eastern Europe that became communist after WWII and were controlled by the Soviet Union. |
