| Subcontinent | a large landmass that is smaller than a continent, such as India |
| Sanskrit | the most important language in Ancient India |
| Caste system | The division of Indian society into groups based on rank, wealth, or occupation |
| Hinduism | the main religion in India; it teaches that everything is part of a universal spirit called Brahman |
| reincarnation | a Hindu and Buddhist belief that a person is born and reborn many times. |
| karma | In Hinduism and Buddhism, the effects that good or bad actions have on a person's soul |
| fasting | going without food and water for a period of time |
| meditation | deep continued thought that focuses the mind on spiritual ideas |
| Buddhism | a religion based on the teachings of Buddha that developed in India in the 500s BC |
| the Buddha | the "Enlightened One," Siddhartha Gautama found enlightenment under a tree, and spent the rest of his life teaching people his ideas |
| nirvana | a state of perfect peace in Buddhism |
| metallurgy | the use of metal, or metal working |
| inoculation | to inoculate; a shot or vaccination |
| missionaries | a person who goes out to spread religion to others |
