Unit 1 Landforms
| Term | Definition |

| Basin | Piece of land surrounded by higher land |
| Bay | Large body of water that extends into a shoreline, usually smaller than a gulf |
| Canyon | Deep narrow valley with steep walls |
| Cape | Piece of land that connects into a river, lake, or ocean |
| Channel | WIDE waterway between TWO landmasses |
| Cliff | Steep, high wall of rock, earth or ice |
| Delta | Result of erosion, soil is carried down stream to the end of a rive r and makes more land |
| Divide | Stretch of high land that separates where water goes |
| Glacier | Large, THICK body of SLOWLY moving piece of ice |
| Gulf | Larger than a bay, body of water the extends into a shoreline |
| Harbor | Sheltered place along the shore where ships can dock, can be man made |
| Hill | Elevated piece of land sloping side and rounding summit, smaller than a mountain |
| Island | Piece of land that is COMPLETELY surrounded by water |
| Isthmus | NARROW piece of land that connects two larger pieces of land |
| Lake | Reasonable size of a body water that is usually inland |
| Mesa | A broad, flat - topped with steep sides smaller than a plateau |
| Moutain | Land with steep sides that arise into a sharp point |
| Mountain Range | A series of CONNECTED moutains |
| Ocean | One of four major bodies of SALT water,surrounds the continents |
| Peninsula | A piece of land that is surrounded three sides by water |
| Plain | An area of leveled ground it is often covered in grass |
| Plateau | An area with flat land and high elevation |
| River | Large natural stream of water that runs through the land |
| River Mouth | Where the river flows into a larger body of water |
| Sea | Large body of water completely or partly surrounded by land |
| Strait | NARROW body of water that connects to larger bodies of WATER |
| Tributary | Small stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river, a branch of a big river |
| Valley | An area of low land between hills or mountains |
| Volcano | Mountain or hill created as liquid rock and ash erupt from inside the earth |
