Chapter 1 World Geography term definitions

Human made Made by humans rather than by nature
Political map A map that shows the boundaries and locations of political units such as countries, states, countries, and towns
Elevation The height above the level of the sea
Relife The elevations or inequalities of a land surface
Intermediate directions The courses of routes of northeast, northwest, south, and southwest
Cardinal directions The four principal sources or routes of north south, east, or west.
Compass rose A map tool that indicates direction
Scale bar Shows the relationship between map measurements and actual distance on Earth.

Relative location Location in relation to other people
Movement The act of process of changing place or position
Ecosystem The complex community of interdependent living things in a given environment.
Human-environment interaction The study of the interrelationship between people and their physical environment.
Cartography The science of mapmaking
Place A particular space with physical and human meaning.
Perceptual region A region defined by popular feelings and images rather than by objective data.
Functional region A central place and the surrounding territory linked to it.
Formal region A region defined by a common characteristic such as production of a product.
Situation Refers to the geographic position of a place in relation to other places or features of a large region.
Site Refers to the specific location of a place including its physical settings.
Regions A brood geographical area distinguished by similar features.
Topography Shape of the earth's physical features.
Thematic map Map that emphasize a single idea or a particular kind of information about an area.
Flow-line maps Map that shows the movement of people, animals, goods, ideas, and physical process like hurricanes and glaciers.
Qualitative map Map that uses colors, symbols, lines, or dots to show information related to a specific idea.
Planar projection A map created by projection an image of the earth onto a plane.
Cylindrical projections A map of the earth projections into a cylinder.
Conic project A map of the earth created by placing a cone over part of the earth model .
Latitude Distance north or south from the equator measured.
Longitude Distance measured by degrees or time east or west from the prime meridian.
