Important people, events and places

Oliver Cromwell He was English. His forces defeated King Charles the I ,and he ruled for 9 years.
Duke of York His brother was Charles II. Charles II gave him New Netherlands, and he renamed it New York. New York prospered under his rule.
William Penn He received land from Charles II as payment of a debt. He was English and a Quaker.He designed, Philadelphia, negotiated treaties with Native Americans, and wrote Pennsylvania's Constitution.
Quakers They were an English religious sect. They believed everyone was equal, people need to follow their inner light to reach salvation, and refused to use force or to fight in wars.
