Bordering states and bodies of water

What is Relative Location? Shows connections between two places using words like near, beside, or next to.
What is a Compass Rose? A symbol on a map that shows cardinal and intermediate directions
What are Cardinal Directions? North, South, East and West
What are Intermediate Directions? Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest
What is a Peninsula? A piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides
What is a Plateau? An area of elevated land that is flat on top
What is the Fall Line? A natural border between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions
What is an Ocean? A large body of salt water. 70% of the earth is covered by oceans.
What is a Continent? A large land mass on earth. There are seven continents.
What bodies of water border Virginia? The Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay
What states border Virginia? Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Caroline
Why was the Atlantic Ocean important to the early settlers? This body of water provided transportation links between Virginia and Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean
Why was the Chesapeake Bay important to the early settlers? It provided a safe harbor and was a source of food and transportation
Why was the James River important to the early settlers? It leads to the Chesapeake Bay. Richmond and Jamestown were located on the James River.
Name the four important rivers in Virginia The Potomac, Rappahannock, York and James
Name cities located on the four important rivers Potomac - Alexandria Rappahannock - Fredericksburg York - Yorktown James - Richmond, Jamestown
What is the Eastern Shore? The peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake Bay on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. It is part of the Coastal Plain region
What is the Dismal Swamp? Explored by George Washington; In the Coastal Plains region; supports a variety of wildlife
What is Lake Drummond? A shallow natural lake in the Dismal Swamp within the Coastal Plains region.
