Who was Luis Munoz Rivera? A vocal advocate of Puerto Rican self-rule.
During the Spanish-American War how was Puerto Rico ruled? It was under US military rule, and we told Puerto Ricans we were there to keep them safe
What did the Foraker Act do? It ended military rule in Puerto Rico and set up a civil government where the US president appointed all of the officials except for the legislature
What did the Supreme Court decide in the Insular Cases? The Constitution did not apply to acquired territories, however, congress retained the right to make them US citizens, which it did
What was the Teller Amendment? An amendment stating that we had no wish to take over Cuba
Although Cuba was independent, what kept it from obtaining complete independence? It was occupied by American Soldiers and the same leaders who served Spain got to stay in power. Anyone who didnt like this rule was imprisoned or exiled
The american occupation in Cuba was not all bad, what good things cam from it? we gave food, water and shelter to thousands of families. We also helped with sanitation and got rid of yellow fever
What happened to Cuba under the Platt Amendment? It became a US protectorate, or a country whose affairs are controlled by a higher power, we withdrew troops but reserved the right to intervene if necessary
What was the reason we still wanted to maintain political control over Cuba? We had invested a lot in their sugar plantations, public utilities, tobacco, and mining industries
Who was Emilio Aguinaldo? A leader of the Fillipino rebels, he was against the annexation of the Phillipines that was stated in the Treaty of Paris
When the Fillipinos rebeled we put them in designated zones that were deadly and unsafe. Why was this especially wrong? It was exactly what we condemned Spain for doing in Cuba
In the end, the war against the Fillipinos cost us 400 million. Why was this stupid? It was 20 times as much as we had purchased the islands for

China was called the "Sick man of Asia" why? It was weakened by war and foreign invasion, France, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Russia had set up many settlements and spheres of influence there and the US hoped to do the same

The boxers rebelled against the invading foreigners who overtook most major cities. theyre uprisings led to the downfall of this, killing of thousands of Chinese The Boxer Rebellion
What was the second part of the Open Door notes? Europeans couldnt use their victory over the boxers to take over more land. The second set of notes stated that the US would safeguard impartial trade of Chinese goods
