Who was Jose Marti? A Cuban poet and journalist who was in exile in New York used guerilla warfare, destroying US owned plantations in order to get us involved in the war for Cuban independence
Who was Valeriano Weyler? A Spanish general who, in order to re-establish order, threw 300,000 Cuban rebels into concentration camps
What newspaper strategy was developed to gain sympathy toward Cubans? Yellow journalism, exaggerating facts
Who were the two biggest newspaper tycoons who fueled yellow journalism? William Hearst and Josepgh Pulitzer (Remington was an artist for them)
Which president was aubject of the De Lome letter scandal? William McKinley, he attempted to get Spain out of Cuba and was beggining to succeed when someone leaked an insulting letter about him that the Spanish minister to the US, De Lome, had written, it enraged the US
Why was the USS Maine explosion important? Even though no one knew the cause, yellow journalists blamed the Spanish
Even though the Spanish agreed to all our terms, we still wanted war. What was our battle cry? Remember the Maine!
What was the opening battle of the Spanish war? Mannila, the capital of the Phillipines. Commodore George Dewey ordered open fire on the Spanish. We had Phillipino support and the Spanish soon surrendered.
our victory at Manilla demonstrated out powerful naval force. As well as William Sampson who blocked the Spanish fleet in Cuba. What did the US lack? A good army, we had few skilled troops and training camps lacked good leaders.
Who were the Rough Riders? A volunteer cavalry lead by Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt who gave up his job as assistant secretary of the nacy to lead the cavalry
San Juan Hill was an important capture for the US in Cuba. This man contributed a bit but was said to be the hero of San Juan Theodore Roosevelt
The Spanish broke through our blockade at the harbor of Santiago. But the ensuing battle led to the destruction of the Spanish navy. What did the US do next? We invaded Puerto Rico
What treaty ended the 15 week long Spanish war? What did Spain give us? The Treaty of Paris 1898; Guam, Puerto Rico and the West Indies, they sold us the Phillipines and Cuba was free
What was the argument over the Phillipines? Whether we had the right to annex it or not
The Treaty was said to violate the DEclaration of Independence. What did Booker T WAshington and Samuel Gompers have to say? Booker: we need to solve racial problems at home before we deal with other things; Gompers: Fillipinos are going to steal our jobs!
The US did what to its newly acquired territories? annexed them
