TermDefinition
George Custer An officer in the American Army who was well respected for his service in the Civil War and the Indian Wars. His reputation was lost during his last stand at the Battle of Bighorn when he and all his men were killed.
Sitting Bull A Sioux Indian Chief who led his tribe to victory against the 7th Cavalry and the Battle of Little Bighorn against Colonel Custer. Later he was killed by an Indian police agent while he resisted arrest.
Crazy Horse A Sioux Indian Chief who worked with Chief Sitting Bull to gather more than 2000 warriors to defend their land at the Battle of Little Bighorn against Colonel Custer.
Chief Joseph Leader of Nez Perce tribe who was ordered to go to a reservation; attempted to lead his people to Canada but they did not have blankets and very little food. He surrendered 30 miles from Canada.
Cowboy A person who herds animals and tends to their needs. This work is usually done on horseback. They do a variety of ranch hand jobs as well.
Joseph Smith The founder of the Mormon Church to persuaded his members to move west
Brigham Young A leader of the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) who decided to move the group west to Utah
Mormon A church founded by Joseph Smith. It is also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Exodusters African Americans who migrated from the South to the West after the Civil War to escape racism
Immigrants Foreigners who came to the United States to live and work
Buffalo Soldiers The nickname the Native Americans gave black men fighting in the American Army
The Grange A group formed by farmers in the 1800s to make life better for farmers by sharing information about crops, prices, supplies and pressuring the government for protection
