words of the week+focus questions for the road to the civil war

antislavery against slavery.
sectionalism an exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country.
Henry Clay Speaker of the house of Kentucky who suggested the Missouri compromise.
Missouri Compromise First, Missouri would be admitted as a slave state, but Maine would be admitted as a free state. Second, a line was drawn at 36'30 degrees, right below Missouri. Everything above it was free territory. Everything below it was slave territiry.
John C. Calhoun Senator of South Carolina who proposed that neither congress nor any territorial government had the authority to ban slavery from a territory or regulate it in any way. The bill didn't pass, but caused debate.
fugitive Runaway.

Stephen Douglas Senator from Illinois who made it so that Congress could vote on different parts of Clay's plan, so you didn't have to vote on something you opposed.
abstain to not cast votes.
Compromise of 1850 included the five main points of Clay's original plan.
What problems did the compromise of 1850 attempt to solve? It attempted to stop the south talk of secession.
Fugitive slave act an act that required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves.
Underground railroad A network of free African Americans and whites who helped runaways find their way to freedom
What impact might the Fugitive Slave act have on states where slavery ws already illegal? It would make them angry against the government and disobey the law. It would make them start things like the underground railroad.
popular sovereignty allowing people to vote weather or not they want to become slave states.
Kansas-Nebraska act The act that let both Kansas and Nebraska become part of the union, and vote one weather they supported slavery
John Brown An abolitionist who believed god had chosen him to end slavery. He killed 5 slave supporters.
Civil war A conflict between citizens of the same country.
Charles Sumner Abolitionist senator of who Massachusetts delivered a speech entitled "The crime against Kansas"
Preston Brooks Representative and distant cousin of Charles Sumner. After Sumner's speech, he hit him over and over on the head with his cane.
What do you think would happen today if someone someone behaved as Preston Brooks did? They would probably go to jail, and their days in the senate would definitely be over.
Roger Taney Chief Justice who ruled that Dred Scott was still a slave.
What were some of the constitutional issues that came up during 1800-1860 The main issue was that the constitution says that Congress can't take away property without due process of law, and slaves were considered property. They weren't considered citizens though, so technically, Scott couldn't take the case to court.
