TermDefinition
historian- people who study and write about the human past.
prehistory- time before written records
archaeologist- scientist who learns about past human life by studying fossils and artifacts
anthropologist- scientist who studies the physical characteristics and cultures of humans and their ancestors
artifact- objects made by humans, such as tools or weapons
fossil- the trace or imprint of a plant or animal that has been preserved in rock
nomad- people who move from place to place with the seasons in search of food
technology- tools and methods use to help humans perform tasks
domesticate- to tame animals and plants for human use
specialization- the development of different kinds of jobs
agriculture- the raising of crops and livestock for food or for other products that are useful to humans
migration- movement of people from one place to another
Paleolithic Era- Old Stone Age; era which tools were first developed
Neolithic Era- New Stone Age
civilization- complex society with cities, organized government, art, religion, class divisions, and a writing system
excavate- the act of digging
culture- beliefs, customs, practices, and behavior of a particular nation or group of people
hunter-gatherer- early humans that survived by hunting small animals and gathering plants
ice age- a period of time during which surface temperatures dropped significantly and huge ice sheets spread out over the world
