Dutch and French Colonies

QuestionAnswer
Diversity A variety of people in a group.
Tolerance Respecting beliefs that are different from one's own.
Missionary A person who teaches his or her religion to others who have different beliefs.
Jacques Marquette A missionary in New France. He traveled down the Mississippi River to set up missions
Louis Jolliet An explorer. He thought the Mississippi River might lead to the Pacific Ocean.
Robert La Salle An explorer. He claimed the Mississippi River and all the land around it for France. He named it Louisiana after King Louis XIV.
What made the population of New Netherland diverse? New Netherland welcomed all settlers no matter what country they came from or what religion they practiced.
Peter Stuyvesant Governor of New Netherland. He did not want settlers with different religious beliefs in the colony.
Why was it easy for England to take control of New Amsterdam? The settlers of New Amsterdam were so unhappy with Stuyvesant, that they refused to fight against the English.
What did the English rename New Amsterdam when they took over? New York
Why did so few settlers live in New France? The climate was cold and made if difficult to farm.
What reasons did Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet have for exploring the Mississippi River? Marquette was setting up missions and Jolliet thought the river might lead to the Pacific Ocean.
How did the traders of New France get fur to sell to Europeans? The traders traded with the Indians. The traders gave the Indians beads, tools, pots, knives, and cloth in exchange for fur.
Samuel Champlain A french fur trader, who fought with the Huron and Algonquin against their enemies.
Who did the French fur traders form a partnership with? The Huron and Algonquin
Iroquois A group of five American Indian nations.
Who were the Huron and Algonquin at war with? Iroquois
Peter Minuit He bought Manhattan Island from the Manhates Indians and started a settlement there called New Amsterdam.
Why did the Dutch West India Company look for settlers from other countries to settle in New Netherlands? Because few people from the Netherlands wanted to move across the Atlantic.
New France In Canada. Missionaries went there to teach religion.
New Amsterdam Founded by Peter Minuit. Had a very diverse group of people living there.
