Social Studies

Definition of Social Studies

TermDefinition
Social Studies The study of the social sciences like political science, history, sociology, and many other topics.
Geography The study of the earths' physical feature, like mountains and valleys.
Sociology The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society.
History The study of past events, particularly in human affairs.
Archaeology The study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains.
Equator The imaginary line that divides the wold into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It's location is 0° latitude.
Prime Meridian The imaginary line that separates the Western and Eastern hemispheres. It's location is 0° longitude.
Compass Rose A circle showing the principle directions printed on a map or chart, for example North, South, East, West.
Continents Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land.
Ocean A very large expanse of sea, in particular, each of the main areas into which the sea is divided.
Physical Indicates desserts, mountains, and plains.
