| strait | narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water |
| glacier | large ice mass that moves slowly down a mountain or across land |
| coastal plain | area of flat land along a sea or ocean |
| peninsula | land that is almost completely surrounded by water |
| delta | triangle shaped area of land at the mouth of a river |
| valley | low land between hills or mountains |
| plain | area of flat or gently rolling low land |
| landform | physical features on the earth's surface |
| piedmont | area at or near the foot of a mountain |
| current | part of a body of water flowing in a certain direction |
| sound | long inlet that separates off shore islands from the mainland |
| tide | regular rise and fall of an ocean |
| drainage basin | the land drained by a river system |
| tundra | cold dry region where trees can not grow |
| fall line | area along which rivers form waterfalls or rapids as the rivers drop to lower land |
| tributary | stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river |
| inlet | any area of water extending into the land from a larger body of water |
| volcano | opening in the earth often raised through which lava, rock, ashes and gases are forced out |
| plateau | area of high mostly flat land |
| sea level | the level of the surface of an ocean or sea |
| mountain range | row of mountains |
| savanna | area of grassland and scattered trees |
| basin | bowl-shaped area of land surrounded by higher land |
