Map Skills
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Absolute location | Exact position of a place on the earth’s surface; example: 40◦N, 100◦E |
| Relative location | General location; example: near the Mall of Georgia |
| Latitude | Location north or south of the equator, measured by imaginary lines (parallels) that are numbered in degrees N or S |
| Longitude | Location east or west of the Prime Meridian measured by imaginary lines (meridians) numbered in degrees E or W |
| Prime Meridian | 0◦ Longitude; passes through Europe (Greenwich, England), Africa, & Antarctica |
| Equator | 0◦ Latitude; passes through South America, Africa, & Asia |
| Map Title | Tells the purpose of the map. It is the first place you should look to see if the map meets your needs |
| Map Scale/Scale Bar | On a map, a divided line showing the map scale, usually in miles or kilometers |
| Compass Rose | Symbol that tells cardinal and intermediate directions |
| Cardinal Directions | North, South, East, West |
| Intermediate Directions | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| Map Key | A code that explains the lines, symbols and colors on a map |
| Physical Map | Shows landforms and water features |
| Political Map | Shows the names and boundaries of countries, location of cities and other man-made features |
