Map Skills

Absolute location Exact position of a place on the earth’s surface; example: 40◦N, 100◦E
Relative location General location; example: near the Mall of Georgia
Latitude Location north or south of the equator, measured by imaginary lines (parallels) that are numbered in degrees N or S
Longitude Location east or west of the Prime Meridian measured by imaginary lines (meridians) numbered in degrees E or W
Prime Meridian 0◦ Longitude; passes through Europe (Greenwich, England), Africa, & Antarctica
Equator 0◦ Latitude; passes through South America, Africa, & Asia
Map Title Tells the purpose of the map. It is the first place you should look to see if the map meets your needs
Map Scale/Scale Bar On a map, a divided line showing the map scale, usually in miles or kilometers
Compass Rose Symbol that tells cardinal and intermediate directions
Cardinal Directions North, South, East, West
Intermediate Directions Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
Map Key A code that explains the lines, symbols and colors on a map
Physical Map Shows landforms and water features
Political Map Shows the names and boundaries of countries, location of cities and other man-made features
