Vocabulary for Social Studies Core Concepts

Historian | people who study events from the past |
Timeline | line marked off with a series of events and dates |
Chronology | list of events in the order in which they occurred |
Period | length of time singled out because of a specific event or development that occurred during that time |
Prehistory | time before humans invented writing |
History | written history |
Primary Source | information that comes directly from a person who experienced it |
Artifacts | objects made by human beings |
Secondary Source | information about an event that does not come from a person who experienced the event |
Bias | unfair preference for or dislike of something |
Archaeology | scientific study of ancient cultures through the examination of artifacts and other evidence |
Anthropology | study of humankind in all aspects, especially development and culture |
Fossils | bones and other remains that have been preserved in rock |
Absolute Location | place's exact position on Earth in terms of longitude and latitude |
Relative Location | location of a place in relation to another place |
Place | mix of human and nonhuman features at a given location |
Region | area with at least one unifying physical or human feature |
Movement | how people, goods and ideas get from one place to another |
Human-Environment Interaction | how people affect their location and how their location affects them; can be positive or negative |
Key/Legend | explains the symbols and shading on a map |
Locator Map | shows a larger area than the main map; gives more detailed location where something is found |
Scale Bar | show how much space on the map represents a given distance on the land |
Compass Rose | diagram on a map that shows direction |
State | region that shares a common government |
City-State | independent state consisting of a city and its surrounding area |
Empire | state containing several countries |
Democracy | citizens hold political power |
Representative Democracy | citizens elect representatives to make government decisions |
Nation-State | a state that is independent of other states |
Monarchy | form of government in which the state is ruled by a king or queen |
Authoritarian | government in which all power is held by a single person or small group |
Communism | a political and economic system in which government owns all property and makes all economic decisions |
