accreditation | college meets requirement of local, state, national, international governing bonds |
ACT | american college test- one of the pre-admission requirements for some american school |
Admission | the college will forward a packet of admission materials |
advanced placement | a high level courses; ability to skip the course in college |
advanced standing | students admitted to college who have already earned credits elsewhere |
aid package | formal term for all the resources offered to a student |
alumni | foremer graduates of the insititution |
application | all the paperwork you need to apply for college |
associate's degree | a two year degree |
applied associates degree | a two year degree with a specialty in one area of study |
award letter | the college's offering of scholarships as awards, etc. |
bookstore | primary source for books on campus |
bursar | college office for financial details. not related to finical aid |
business office | the place that handles all paperwork |
candidates reply date | important date to respond to a college's offer of admission |
catalog | a school's listings of all classes |
CEEB | College Entrance Examination Board- offers tests for AP/credit |
class rank | how you compare to your peers in your class |
class schedule | your list of classes, times, and locations |
CLEP | college level exam program- offers test for AP/credit |
college calendar | dates, times for academic programs, vacations, etc. |
college fair | a free, open invitation presentation by many colleges |
college tie in courses | offered classes during high school career that are college levels |
commuter | a student who travels to school each day and doesn't live on campus |
concurrent enrollment | registered at two colleges at once |
cooperative work-study education | school based programs offers work and study |
core requirement | specific courses needed for graduation |
course number | 4 digits: first # is level of class; 2 is course and dept. 4 is credits received |
credit by examination | take a test to get credit for a course (CEEB, CLEP) ability to skip pre-requisite |
credit hours | the number of hours a week a class meets to earn credits |
Cum Laude/magna cum laude/summa cum laude | the honors designations for college |
DANTES (DSST) | test for military personnel to get credits |
Dean's list | equivalent of the honor roll (3.5 GPA) |
deferred admission | taking a year off. based on health, travel and war like issues |
degree requirements | list of what and how many credits are required for graduation |
department | the chairperson and all instructors and teaching assistants |
discussion courses | course that requires active participation from students |
division | collection of departments within a specific area of concentration |
drop/add | procedure at the beginning of a semester where a student can change their courses |
early admission | beginning college before completing 4 years of high school |
early decision (action) | if you have your heart set on one particular school apply early and asking for early decision |
expected family contribution (EFC) | number of federal government financial aid expect your family to contribute |
elective | a course that isn't required you choose it |
FAFSA (Free application federal student aid) | online document you fill out financial aid information |
federal loans | offered through the federal government |
fees | additional money required the school ( not including in the tuition) |
fraternity/sorority | national organization of social groups; known as "Greek system" |
full time/part time | full time designation-18 hours (12 or more credits) |
GPA | grade point average |
graduation requirements | number of credits, specific courses, types of courses, core studies and various fees |
grants | money given to a student freely with no repayment obligation |
honors program | small, select program for the cream of the crop within a school or department |
independent study | a course of study that does not follow the normal catalog of courses |
junior or community college | commuter college which offers a 2 year degree program |
laboratory course | requires "hands-on" participation in some types of laboratory setting |
lecture | instructor talks to a large group of people, little class interaction |
letter grades | the typical A thru F which are converted to GPA |
Major/minor | students area of specialty and sub-specialty |
midterms/final | exams given halfway through the semester and at the end |
NCAA initial eligibility certification | requirements for National collegiate athletic association eligibility |
non-credit course | a course for which no credit is awarded |
open door | college admissions policy which lets anyone who has a high school diploma into the base program |
pass/fail | no letter grade or value for GPA but credits are awarded |
placement exams | most colleges require these in several subjects |
pre-requisite | class you must take to gain entrance into a specific class |
private/public | colleges that don't get money from government are private. public schools do |
registrar | where a student adjusts their schedule pays fees, and declares their major |
required elective | a course which is required for a major field or study |
rolling admission | college that doesn't schedule all acceptance/denials at the same time |
SAR | student aid report generated by students FAFSA application |
SAT | scholastic aptitude test. standard school test required by most US colleges |
special term study | a time period of study which doesn't follow the usual college calendar |
student ID | all colleges require a photo ID |
T.A. | junior scholar or graduate employed on a temporary contract |
Transcript | list of student's grades; college version of report card |
transfer credit | college credit which was received at another institution |
tuition | cost of attending classes in college |
tutor | someone who can help a student with the course material |
undergraduate | someone who hasn't received their first bachelor's degree |
university | college which offers a master's degree program of above |
wait list | students are put on a wait list if they aren't immediately accepted/rejected by a college |
waiver | a permission slip, usually signed by the instructor or department |
withdrawal | removing oneself from a particular class |
