TermDefinition
Arsenal A place to store weapons and military equipment
Secede To withdraw or break away from a nation or organization
Fugitive A person who is running away from legal authority
Abolitionist Person who sought the end of slavery in the US in the early and mid-1800’s
Civil War Conflict between citizens of the same country
Border States States between the North and South that was divided over whether to remain in the Union or join the Confederacy: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri
Martyr A person who sacrifices his or her life for a principle or cause
States’ Rights Theory that individual states are independent and have the right to control their most important affairs
Enlist To formally join a military force
Justify To provide an explanation for; to find reasons to support
Total War A strategy of bringing war to the entire society, not just the military
Casualties Soldiers who were killed, wounded, or captured, or missing in battle
Emancipation Proclamation Decree issued by President Lincoln freeing slaves in the parts of the Confederacy still in rebellion on January 1, 1863
