CASH CROPS A crop that can be sold easily in markets
CHARTER A document granting the holder the right to settle a colony
DISSENT To disagree with or oppose an opinion
PERSECUTE To mistreat a person or group on the basis of their beliefs
INDENTURED SERVANT Laborer who agrees to work without pay for a certain period of time in exchange for passage to America
MERCANTILISM An economic theory that a nation’s power depends on its ability to increase wealth by increasing exports and receiving precious metals
PACIFISTS People opposed to the use of war or violence to settle disputes
IMPORT To bring in goods from foreign countries
SERVANT A person who performs duties for others
REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT A system by which people elect delegates to make laws and conduct government
SLAVE CODES Rules focusing on the behavior and punishment of enslaved people
SUBSISTENCE FARMING Producing just enough to meet immediate needs
TOLERANCE The ability to accept or put up with different views or behavior
TRIANGULAR TRADE Trade route between three destinations, such as Britain, West Africa, and the West Indies
