What is geography?

| Geography | The study of Earth's physical and cultural features. |
| landforms | the natural features of the land’s surface |
| climate | the average weather conditions in a certain area over a long period of time |
| environment | all the living and nonliving things that affect life in an area |
| compass rose | allows a reader of a map to orientate the map or to determine which way is north on the map |
| cartographers | create maps |
| Map Legend | where the symbols used on the map are explained. |
| Scale | indicates how much a map is "zoomed" or magnified |
| Physical Maps | illustrate the physical features of an area, such as the mountains, rivers and lakes |
| Political Maps | do not show physical features. Instead, they indicate state and national boundaries and capital and major cities |
| Road Maps | show major and some minor highways and roads, airports, railroad tracks, cities and other points of interest in an area |
| Topographical Maps | include contour lines to show the shape and elevation of an area. |
| Resource and Economic Maps | feature the type of natural resources or economic activity that dominates an area |
| Climate Maps | give general information about the climate and precipitation (rain and snow) of a region |
