Internationalism

TermDefinition
AFN A national advocacy organization representing First Nation citizens in Canada, which includes more than 900,000 people living in 634 First Nation communities and in cities and towns across the country.
Arab Spring The revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests (both non-violent and violent), riots, and civil wars in the Arab world that began on 18 December 2010 in Tunisia with the Tunisian Revolution, and spread throughout many Arab Nations
Balance of Power The idea that national security is enhanced when military capabilities are distributed so that no one state is strong enough to dominate all others.
Bilateralism The political, economic, or cultural relations between two sovereign states
Cold War A state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact).
Continentalism The agreements or policies that favor the regionalization and/or cooperation between nations within a continent. The term is used more often in the European and North American contexts
Cuban Revolution An armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement and its allies against the US-backed authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista.
DART A multidisciplinary military organization designed to deploy on short notice anywhere in the world in response to situations ranging from natural disasters to complex humanitarian emergencies
Department of National Defence A Canadian government department responsible for defending Canada's interests and values at home and abroad.
ECOSOC It is the principal body of the UN for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.
Embargo A partial or complete prohibition of commerce and trade with a particular country or a group of countries.
Environmental Protectionism A practice of protecting the natural environment on individual, organizational or governmental levels, for the benefit of both the natural environment and humans.
EU A politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states
General Assembly The organ of the United which all member nations have equal representation. Its powers are to oversee the budget of the United Nations, appoint the non-permanent members to the Security Council, receive reports.
Global Citizen A person who places their identity with a "global community" above their identity as a citizen of a particular nation or place. The idea is that one’s identity transcends geography or political borders
Hegemonic internationalism The theory that the world is being integrated based on unequal terms, with the dominance of one nation or nation state over others.
Humanitarianism A moral of kindness, benevolence, and sympathy extended universally and impartially to all human beings. No distinction is to be made in the face of suffering or abuse
ICRC Known generally as the Red Cross, it works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law.
IGO An organization composed primarily of sovereign states (referred to as member states), or of other intergovernmental organizations.
IMF An organization of 188 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.
International Court of Justice The principal judicial organ of the United Nations and is based in The Hague (Netherlands). The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions
Internationalism A movement which advocates a greater economic and political cooperation among nations for the theoretical benefit of all.
Interventionist The policy or doctrine of intervening, especially government interference in the affairs of another state or in domestic economic affairs
ISIS or ISIL The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has taken over from the al-Qa’ida organization founded by Osama bin Laden as the most powerful and effective extreme jihadi group in the world.
Isolationism A category of foreign policies institutionalized by leaders who asserted that their nations' best interests were best served by keeping the affairs of other countries at a distance
Kyoto Protocol An international treaty, which extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits State Parties to reduce greenhouse gases emissions. Abandoned by Canada and not signed by the USA
League of Nations The League of Nations was an international organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, created after the First World War to provide a forum for resolving international disputes and lasting till the outbreak of WWII
Legacy of Colonialism The changes that affect nations and regions governed by invasive colonial rulers. In many areas of the world, including Africa, colonialism brought a change in many facets of society.
Liberal internationalism An approach based on the belief that, through greater interaction and co-operation, nations and nation-states can achieve common goals, especially peace and prosperity.
Montreal Protocol An international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.
Multilateralism An agreement whereby various nations or nation-states co-operate to pursue their interests and goals beyond their national borders, not alone, but in co-operation and coalitions with other states
NAFTA North America Free Trade Agreement- an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral rules-based trade bloc in North America.
NATO An intergovernmental military alliance signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
Non-governmental Organization An organization that is neither a part of a government nor a conventional for-profit business. Usually set up by ordinary citizens, they may be funded by governments, foundations, businesses, or private persons
OAU A continental organization to provide an effective forum that enabled all Member States to adopt coordinated positions on matters of common concern to the continent in international fora and defend the interests of Africa effectively.
OIF An organization of politics and governments of French-speakers
Orange Revolution A series of protests and political events that took place in Ukraine from late November 2004 to January 2005, claiming elections were marred by massive corruption, voter intimidation and direct electoral fraud.
Peacekeeping The preservation of peace, especially the supervision by international forces of a truce between hostile nations with the proviso that supervising forces are not allowed to fire unless fired upon.
Peacemaking An intervention during armed combat in an attempt to "make peace.”
Revolution A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system.
Revolutionary Internationalism A belief that conflicts within societies are determined by international factors and alliances.
Schengen Agreement A treaty was signed on 14 June 1985 by five of the ten member states of the European Economic Community but was not implemented (partially) until 1995. It proposed the gradual abolition of border checks at the signatories' common borders.
Secretariat The officials or office entrusted with administrative duties, maintaining records, and overseeing or performing secretarial duties for the United Nations
Security Council The division of the UN charged with maintaining international peace, composed of five permanent members (U.S., Russian Federation, France, United Kingdom, and the People's Republic of China) and ten temporary members, each serving for two years.
Self-determination A principle whereby a nation is free to decide its own political allegiance or form of government
Supra-nationalism Outside or beyond the authority of one national government, as a project or policy that is planned and controlled by a group of nations.
Terrorism The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.
UNAMIR Mission established by Security Council on 5 October 1993. It was intended to assist in ending the Rwandan Civil War. It was unsuccessful due to the limitations of its rules of engagement, in the Rwandan Genocide and outbreak of fighting.
UNCLOS The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea is a comprehensive legal text that establishes jurisdiction and governance parameters of many key natural resources, including high seas fisheries.
Unilateralism Doctrine or agenda that supports one-sided action. Such action may be in disregard for other parties, or a commitment towards an action which others may find agreeable.
United Nations An intergovernmental organization established 24 October 1945 to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193.
War on Terror Also known as Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), refers to the international military campaign that started after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States
World Bank An international financial institution that provides loans to developing countries for capital programs. It comprises two institutions
World Council of Indigenous Peoples A formal international body dedicated to having concepts of aboriginal rights accepted on a worldwide scale. It had observer status in the United Nations, but was dissolved in 1996
WTO The only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.
