Hinduism Characteristics caste system (brahmins --> untouchables); Vedic texts/ Vedas, many gods; reincarnation- reborn into different caste; you are reborn into better caste if you have good karma, dharma
Confucianism philosophy based on Confucius; family, moral values, and respect for elders are important; put others before you ALWAYS; respects others, and you are always last to matter
Reasons Europeans Colonized they wanted to control trade between other countries, wanted to get goods and resources, wanted to expand empires, wanted to establish countries, and the Europeans wanted land
Effect of European Colonization other countries gained independence; some countries experienced ethnic conflicts; built railroads/ schools, improved transportation and and, cause wars = damage and deaths in country

OPEC benefits made fair and reasonable prices for oil buyers and sellers
Suez Canal Crisis (1956) Britain created canal to make money near Egypt, took control of it & wouldn't allow Britain to go through or Israeli ships, so britain attacked Egypt - sunk 40 ships & then gave it back to GB - UN stepped in and cleared out canal and gave it back to Egypt
Iran Crisis Shah made alliance with US; iranians did not like this, so tried to over-throw government and set up islamic republic with a revolution, held over 50 Americans hostage @ embassy
Saddam Hussein became Iraq's president in 1979; harsh ruler, controlled media, restricted personal freedoms & killed political enemies
Persian Gulf Taliban was in coflict w/ US; group of allies (US in charge) forced the Iraqi's out of kuwait; desert shield (talking- long) and desert storm (fighting- 100 hrs)- oil spilled in Persian Gulf; Iraq refused UN
War on Terrorism 9/11 - terrorist attacks on 2 twin towers, pentagon and field outside Pittsburgh (on way to white-house)--plane crashes; Osama bin Laden leader of terrorist group Al Qaeda did the attacks (Afghanistan)
Occupied Territories Gaza Strip, WEst Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights
Ghandi Independence he convinced (by peaceful protesting) millions of Indians to support independence; most important leader of the Indian independence movement --> GB agreed to make India independent
South Africa Apartheid Ending (separating of races) countries banned trade with them refused to invest $ in them; SA wasn't included in sports events and meetings- SA was became isolated, protesting increased; ANC formed to protect rights of blacks South Africans, ANC = punished
Government Type with Little Participation communism, dictatorship, monarchy

Ethnocentrism the feeling by one ethnic group that its ways are superior to others
