what is mercantilism? the idea that a country should export more than it imports
what is Bacon's rebellion? When Nathaniel Bacon and other farmers were upset the Virginian government would not give them native American lands so they attacked the colonial government
what is Shay's rebellion? (1786-87) Daniel Shay and many other farmers were in debt because of high taxes after the war, the Massachusetts government threatened to take his farm so he gathered a group of 1,200 armed farmers and led them against a federal arsenal
why did Daniel Shay rebel against the government? he felt the government had no right to punish him for a problem they created
Who was Thomas Paine? the writer of the revolutionary pamphlet "Common Sense" he called for America to free itself from the British tyranny
who was Thomas Jefferson? a delegate of the Continental Congress from Virginia main author of the Declaration of Independence 2nd president
What were the battles of Lexington and Concord? the first 2 battles of the revolutionary war in Massachusetts "shot heard round the world"
What were some weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? - no executive or judicial branches -9/13 states have to approve of a bill for it to become a law - federal government cannot collect taxes -federal government cannot create an army -states regulate their own trade and taxes
what was the 3/5 compromise? the north said slaves were not people south said they were 3 slaves equals 5 people
what is the electoral college? a group of people elected by each state's legislature that selects the president and vice president
What is the bill of rights? the first 10 amendments to the constitution
who were the federalists? a political party that wanted a strong national government and to divide power between the state and national government
who were the anti-federalists? a political party that did not want a large national government, more power given to the states, and a bill of rights
what was the Great (Connecticut) compromise? 2 houses in congress 1 with equal state representation 1 with representation based on a state's population
