Who was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III? Charlemagne.
What is a clergy? A council made up of monks and priests who give their lives to serve the Church.
Why did Charlemagne protect Pope Leo III? Pope Leo was threatened by his rivals.
What is excommunicate? To remove someone from a church or religious group.
Why did Charlemagne want the title "emperor" ? He wanted to be given a special relationship with God.
What was central to most people's lives? The Christian Church.
Who were the descendants of the Vikings? The Normans.
What was William the Conqueror well-known for? He defeated King Harold in the battle of Hastings, and was later crowned as king of England.
What were the languages of law, culture, and government? French and Latin.
What is a parliament? A gathering or representatives who make laws.
What were some ideas in the Magna Carta? Rule of law, trial by jury, and the rights of people to have a voice in law.
What were the houses that were divided in the English Parliament? The House of Lords, and the House of Commons.
What made King John recognize the rights of barons? A document called the Magna Carta.
Which year did Normandy invade England? 1066.
Why did Charlemagne visit Pope Leo III in Rome? To show further support.
What year did the Turks conquer Jerusalem? 1701.
What are the Crusades? They are Christian Religious Wars or Holy Wars.
What did the crusaders return home with? Silk, spices, and other goods to trade.
From where did the crusaders get no support? From local population in Palestine.
What was the Inquisition? Church court designed to investigate and judge heretics.
What were the armies made of? Of Knights.
What were the Spanish Muslims known as? They were known as Moors or Moorish rulers.
What did the capital city have? Mosques, book shops, and a great library.
What did the capital city houses have? Mosaic floors, gardens, fountains.
Where did the student flock to? The city of Córdoba.
What were Muslims tolerant of? Jews and Christians.
Non-Muslims had to do what? To follow certain strict rules and pay special taxes.
When did Muslim rule decline? 1002.
