How did popes try to establish authority over kings ? Pope Urban issued a set of rules.
What is authority ? Authority is a right or power.
What was the center of most people's lives . The Christian Church was the center of most people's lives.
What does cooperation mean ? Cooperation means working together for a common cause.
What were two ways that Charlemagne supported Pope Leo III ? Charlemagne protected Pope Urban III when he Pope had to leave Rome. Charlemagne also traveled to Rome to show further support.
Why did Charlemagne want the title "emperor" ? He belived it gave him a special connection with god.
What were Gregory VII's ideas about his power ? He issued a list of rules declaring that he had the authority over all church and non-church leaders, as well as claiming he had the right to choose all bishops plus the right to dethrone emperors.
How did the Norman Conquest set in motion a chain of events that changed English rule and law ? From it came the Magna Carta which stated that even the king must follow the laws of the land.
What languages were the law, culture, and government under the Normans in ? French and Latin.
What does document mean ? Document means a written or printed item.
What was the Magna Carta ? The Magna Carta was a document that stated that not even the king was above the law of the land.
Who led each side in the battle of Hastings ? In the battle of the Hastings there were two leaders, each one led a side. The leader for one of the sides was the duke of Normandy, William. The leader for the other side was Harold Godwin.
What were two important limits on the kings power that came from the Magna Carta? The Magna Carta made it pretty clear that even the king wasnt above the law of the land. It also said that the kings wouldnt collect tax unfairly.
What opportunity did Pope Urban II see for himself in calling for the crusades? He saw this as an opportunity to make his claim over all Christendom real, he also wanted to free the holy land from Turks.
What was the inquisition? The inquisition was a church court designed to investigate and judge heretics.
What were heretics? Heretics were people who believed in a belief that is not allowed by official church doctorine.
What were two countries in Europe that expelled Jews in the Middle Age?. The two countries were England and France.
What were two ideas that Pope Urban linked? The two ideas were the idea of the holy war and the idea of pilgrimage.
What does the word tolerate mean? Tolerate means that you are not easily annoyed.
What were three subjects that students came to Cordoba to study? The three subjects were music, medicine, and philosophy.
What was the name of the movement by Christian kingdoms to drive the Muslims out of Spain? The name was the Reconquista.
Why were early Moorish rulers in Spain tolerant of Judaism and Christianity? they were tolerant because the Qur'an encouraged tolerance.
Why was Isabella and Ferdinand's marriage important? It united Spain's largest kingdoms, and formed the basis for a Spanish state.
