| What was the Land Ordinance of 1785? | The Land Ordinance of 1785 was a law passed that divided the western land into 6 by 6 mile squares called townships. Each township was divided into 36 smaller areas. |
| What was the Northwest Ordinance? | The Northwest Ordinance divided the northwest territory into 3-5 smaller territories. Congress would appoint a governor first. At 5000 adult males, they could elect a legislature. At 60,000 population, a territory could apply to be a state. |
| What was Shays' Rebellion? | Shays' Rebellion was when Daniel Shays led a group of farmers to rebel against the government. The farmers marched on Springfield, MA to the federal arsenal (where they keep the weapons). Shays' Rebellion was crushed there. |
| What is the Electoral College? | The Electoral College was proposed as a way to elect the prez. Every four years, each state chooses as many electors as it had members in the House and Senate. The electors vote for Prez and VP. If they couldn't reach an agreement, the House would choose. |
| What did James Madison do that stood out among the Constitutional Convention delegates? | James Madison was the best-prepared of the delegates. When he was not speaking, he was taking notes. |

| What did the Great Compromise state? | The Great Compromise said that Congress would have a House of Representatives and a Senate. Each state would have 2 senators(elected by legislature). The House would have a number of representatives proportional to its population (elected by voters). |
| What was the Three-Fifths Compromise? | This compromise stated that slaves were to be counted as three-fifths of a person (hence the name). |
| What was the Trade Compromise? | The Trade Compromise stated that Congress would control most trade, except for certain things: it could not end the slave trade for 20 years, until 1808; and it could not tax exports |
| What was the House of Representatives? | The House of Representatives is part of Congress. Each state gets as many representatives as is proportional to its population. They are elected by the people. |
| What was the Senate? | The Senate is part of Congress. Each state gets two senators. They are elected by the legislature. |
