Jamestown Terms

Use these terms for the test on January 15

QuestionAnswer
Jamestown The first successful English Colony in North America. A group of men attempted to find gold in Virginia. Instead they suffered greatly and almost failed. Luckily, they became a prosperous Tobacco farming colony.
John Smith An important leader in Jamestown. Created the "no work, no food" policy.
Pocahontas Daughter of the Powahatan chief. She helped a lot in making peace between the English and the Tribe.
Starving Time The time during the first year of Jamestown where most of the settlers almost died due to a lack of food.
John Rolfe Discovered that Jamestown could make a lot of money growing Tobacco. Married Pocahontas
Gentlemen Men that were born into noble families. They were expected to be models of society. They were not expected to work.
Powahatans The Native American tribe that lived in the Virginia colony.
Joint Stock Company A company owned by more than one investor.
1607 The year Jamestown was settled.
